Mobile Downtown : Until the "urban renewal" projects of the 1960s, Mobile was one of the most beautiful cities in the South.  The blend of French and Spanish styles, the wrought iron on balconies, the azealas, and the bay, all combined to give Mobile a character and charm unrivaled outside of New Orleans' French Quarter and Charleston.  Mobile is now a city of margins and mixtures, attempting to retain something of its old character while projecting the progressive, "City on the Move," image so beloved of chambers of commerce.    Old blends with new and the commercial activity of Mobile's port and rail lines is always felt around the edges.
